Mayuyama Matsutaro, how he became an art dealer

Junkichi's father, Matsutaro Mayuyama, was born in 1882 in Yatsuo, Toyama Japan.  Here is what Junkichi wrote about his father.

“In my younger days, I learned from a Buddhist sutra that there is a word ‘shion 四恩’, which means “four indebtedness”. That is to say, the first is indebtedness to one’s parents, the second is to one’s society, the third is to the supreme head of one’s country and the fourth is to ‘Sanpo’, the three treasures-Buddha, doctrine and priesthood. I think the word is justifiable. Now I am writing about the above indebtedness, to my father.

My father was born to a poverty-stricken family. Until he reached the age of maturity, as the eldest son, he experiences many hardships. He had to leave school when he was an eighth grader, probably only fourteen or fifteen years of age. His memoranda show that after leaving school and until he married at the age of 28, the 13 years had been the most struggling time of his life. His father was engaged in sericulture. When fire accidentally destroyed his house, he had to borrow a considerable amount of money from a friend. It was then my father felt his responsibility as the eldest son and started to work at menial jobs to get a daily income in order to help pay off the loan. He continually shifted jobs, some lasting only a month and one to two years at the longest.

For more than a decade, he worked in a manner of trial and error to look what he wanted to do as his life-time work. In due course, my father started to work for Mr. Matsui who was dealing with second hand goods in Toyama. It was then he realized that business in Chinese antiques would be his ultimate goal. By courtesy of Mr. Matsui, he became acquainted with Mr. Yoshitaro Jintsu, who had already then made many trips to China. It was with his assistance that my father was able to go to Beijing. There, he worked as a solicitor for the Hayashi Hotel where Mr. Jintsu regularly stayed. Thus, my father made his start in China.

In 1905, my father obtained “Hakamagoshi no Koro”, a kind of an incense burner. He was able to make a fabulous profit on this and experience of a profitable business led him to decide definitely to become an art dealer.”

“My father's affection for me seemed to have far exceeded everyone’s imagination. One of many pictures of my father and I, I was wearing a cloak made of woolen fabric covered with a lot of wool, and had kept that style until I was about five years old. I still remember the outfit of days in Beijing. My father had a mustache. It seems that it was good to look older than actual age, in all occasion at that time in China.”
